I’ve hit an unexpected slow time here at work right now so I thought I’d take the opportunity to post. It’s been a really long time since I’ve had the time.
Things are finally starting to settle down around here. It’s all still a huge mess, but I might actually have the time and energy to work on it soon.
I’m not even sure where to start this . . . .
Saturday morning, Justin and I got up around 7:00 and packed up the rest of our bedroom—took apart the bed, threw our bathroom things in a bag that we’d be able to find, and started to work on the rest of whatever needed to happen for the move. We rented the truck on Thursday so we could start packing in the things that we’d already boxed. Justin and Tony got most of the things from the garage stored in there by the end of Thursday evening, and we got more in there Friday afternoon. But there was still a lot to go when we started Saturday morning.
Around 9:00, three guys from Two Men and a Truck showed up to help us move the heavy things. We hired them for two hours, and they worked hard for that time, moving the sectional sofa, the bed, the tv, the washer and dryer, the dining room table, the dressers. All the things that we really didn’t want to have to carry down from the third floor of the building. They did a great job, too, being careful to wrap things in cellophane and padding. Even with Tony helping us, there was no way we would have managed to do all of that without their help.
At the end of their two hours, we worked to finish up the little things that were left. Lots of little things. It’s amazing how those little cubbies add up to a whole lot. And we have way, WAY too much stuff.
But we got as much as we could fit into the truck and our cars and then set off for Bluffton. It was nice to have the 40 minute break to just sit and calm down for a while before getting to the house and starting to unload. We had to unload the whole truck on Saturday because it was due back to the rental place by 8:00 that night. So we got to the house and started piling box after box into the dining room. And the living room. And the downstairs bathroom. And one of the upstairs bedrooms. And into the kitchen. The downstairs is a maze of boxes working around furniture and small pathways for people to walk.
But we got it emptied. I had to stop before the end of the truck because I just couldn’t do it any longer. It was too hot and my feet hurt too much and my body just couldn’t handle going on any more. Justin told me to stop because I was gasping and limping and I started to cry because I was just so exhausted. But Justin and Tony got the truck emptied out and then they (along with Wendy) drove back to return it, with plenty of time to spare. They picked up a few more things from the house, got some food for the next couple days and dinner for that night, and came back. Meanwhile, Jessi, Rose, and I showered and rested, and started working on unpacking a few things.
Tonight, we’re going back to the apartment again to pick up some things that are still there. We were all so exhausted Saturday afternoon that we just gave up on the little things left at the house. So we have to go find out what was left and get it to the new house. We’ll be going back this weekend, too, to clean it up and everything else that’s required when you leave a place.
Meanwhile, we’re trying to find where things have been hidden in the new house, in the piles and piles of boxes. We have a lot of work ahead of us to get this whole mess cleaned up.
Justin’s family left yesterday morning and his grandmother left early this morning. The house is so quiet now that it’s only Justin and me. And all the boxes.
I’m still so exhausted. My feet don’t hurt as badly as they did and I finally have feeling back in my pinky toe on my left foot again. My legs and arms are still stiff and sore. But I’m so happy to be in our new house. Our back door looks out at a wooded area and it feels like we’re living out in the country, a little. The upstairs bathroom is so great, with the double vanity and separate shower and tub. And windows! In the bathroom! And I’m very much looking forward to having an office all to myself. Hopefully I’ll be able to actually get some writing done now.
But we still have a lot to do. I’ll try to get some pictures so you can see what kind of mess we’re living in right now. And then some after we’ve gotten settled to show what it looks like all prettified up. Of course, I still don’t have a clue where my computer ended up and we don’t have internet access from home yet. But that’ll happen sometime soon.
My time is up and I’ve got to get back to work, but hopefully this works as a fairly good update for all ya’ll. Feel free to call! Work is easing up slowly, and the man I’m covering for will be back on Monday. And then I’ll just have to get my home back organized and life will be back to normal. I’m looking forward to that. I’ve had enough of chaos for a while.
Take care! Talk with you all again soon.
